What's this? Feasting off a king-sized lead-in from CSI: Miami, CBS11's 10 p.m. newscast scored twin wins Monday.
The victory among 25-to-54-year-olds -- key advertiser demo for news programming -- was especially unusual. CBS11 very rarely prevails in that league. Meanwhile, NBC5 plunged to fourth place at 10 p.m. in both total homes and with 25-to-54-year-olds. That's what a lead-in from NBC's down and almost out Journeyman will/won't do for you. Here are the telling tales of the tape on both scorecards.
TOTAL HOMES
9:45 to 10 p.m. lead-in (CSI: Miami) -- 338,584 homes
CBS11 news -- 204,590 homes
Lead-in (The Bachelor) -- 175,363 homes
Belo8 news -- 182,670 homes
Lead-in (Fox4 9 p.m. local news) -- 73,068 homes
Fox4 news -- 90,117 homes
Lead-in (Journeyman) -- 60,890 homes
NBC5 news -- 75,504 homes
25-to-54-YEAR-OLDS
Lead-in -- 212,380
CBS11 news -- 146,370
Lead-in -- 152,110
Belo8 news -- 140,630
Lead-in -- 45,920
Fox4 news -- 80,360
Lead-in -- 43,050
NBC5 news -- 54,530
The night's big dog at 10 p.m. turned out to be none of the above. The sainted Green Bay Packers overtime win at Denver, featuring ESPN's virtually non-stop canonization of QB Brett Favre, drew 309,321 total homes from 10 to 10:30 p.m. This longtime Pack fan and Wisconsin native went to bed elated, but still a bit nauseated by all the Favre adulation. If you're a Broncos fan, you were justifiably screaming at your TV set. Cheese whiz.
In other news competitions, Fox4 again controlled the 6 a.m. festivities with wins in both ratings measurements. And the 7 to 9 a.m. portion of its Good Day began a new two-pronged winning streak over the three competing network morning shows.
Belo8 countered with across-the-board wins at 5 and 6 p.m.
The prime-time ratings were paced by the first Mark Cuban-less edition of ABC's Dancing with the Stars, which had 353,162 total homes. The previous Monday's performance edition, with Cuban doing a pre-eviction samba, amassed 397,001 homes. So interest indeed fell off a bit in D-FW.
ABC also seems to have a keeper in the following Samantha Who?. The new sitcom, starring Christina Applegate as an accident-induced amnesiac, drew a nice-sized 270,352 homes to beat CBS' competing Rules of Engagement (194,848 homes).
