NBC has named Tom Brokaw as moderator of Meet the Press through this fall's presidential election. He will begin on June 29, succeeding the late Tim Russert.
Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, who filled in on Meet the Press Sunday (June 22), made the announcement at the end of the program. In an accompanying press release, NBC News president Steve Capus said of Brokaw and Meet the Press: "To have someone of Tom's stature step up and dedicate himself to ensuring its ongoing success is not only a testament to his loyalty to Tim, but his enduring commitment to NBC News and our viewers."
Brokaw noted in the release that he's been appearing on NBC's signature Sunday morning program since the Watergate era.
"Tim made Meet the Press the center of the universe for informative and lively discussions of public affairs, particularly the exciting 2008 campaign for president," Brokaw said. "And I intend to continue that commitment to our viewers."
A column posted Sunday, June 15th on unclebarky.com advocated Brokaw as the optimum interim successor to Russert, who died the previous Friday at age 58.
