Idol: Sligh hits the skids

Chris Sligh knew he blew it; Haley Scarnato barely buys more time.

The two chickenhearted judges evaded the question, but Simon Cowell of course had a ready-made barb.

"I think it's 'Bye Bye Curly,' " he sniped when asked which of Wednesday's bottom twosome would be going home.

That would be Chris Sligh, who out-stunk San Antonio's Haley Scarnato in American Idol's latest national election.

Sanjaya Malakar? Not even close. Declared "safe" early in the proceedings, he let his hair down from the previous night's plume. But host Ryan Seacrest took the stage in a Peacock-ian wig, declaring himself "Sanjaya'd" as the masses roared and even Cowell looked bemused.

Sligh sunk himself with a tone-deaf rendition of The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic." But at least he made the song his own. Wednesday night's celebrity performer, Gwen Stefani, clearly lip-synced her way through her latest hit, "The Sweet Escape." She just so happens to be starting a tour, so beware, money sheller-outers.

The Idol field is now down to nine, with Sanjaya seemingly in no imminent danger. Perhaps he's still good for the show -- but only to a point. A couple of other relatively boring singers -- Scarnato and Phil Stacey -- could leave without creating a ripple. After that it gets a bit dicey. Idol can't afford having a latter day William Hung hanging around much longer than that.
