Lost, which lately is finding itself again creatively, will end in the 2009-10 season and have uninterrupted 16-episode arcs during each of its final three years on ABC.
The network and the show's producers announced that big news Monday, keeping a promise to announce a wrapup well before it happens.
"We felt this was the only way to give it a proper creative conclusion," ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson said in a statement. "Due to the unique nature of the series, we knew it would require an end date to keep the integrity and strength of the show consistent throughout, and to give the audience the payoff they deserve."
Co-creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse termed it a "bold and unprecedented move for ABC . . . We always envisioned Lost as a show with a beginning, a middle and end. By announcing officially when that ending will be, the audience will now have the security of knowing that the story will play out as we've intended."
ABC's 16-episode orders per season are down from the 24 hours produced in each of Lost's first two seasons, and the 23 that will air this season before the show goes off on May 22nd.
The fourth season of Lost likely will start in January, although ABC hasn't said anything officially yet. The show has aired in two uninterrupted chunks this season, with the failed serial drama Day Break filling in until low ratings prompted an earlier cancellation than planned.
